Get Involved

Would you like to make a difference in your community?  The Garden City Police Department is looking for a few good citizen volunteers for assistance in every aspect of our program which includes, Records, Patrol, Criminal Investigations Unit and Community Service.

 Records

This division is strictly clerical, with occasional deliveries to be made.  Within this division you would complete data entry, file, assist with the public by answering phone call or in person, pull reports, make copies and picking up forms from print shops or other agencies.

 Patrol

This is the most visible area of the volunteer program.  The patrol officers will utilize the volunteers in many important areas.  The greenbelt patrol requires groups of two volunteers to walk or ride the greenbelt through Garden City.  The volunteers document problems, concerns and suspicious activities discovered either on their own or brought to their attention by citizens.  The volunteers also patrol business and residential areas to conduct security checks and vacation house watches.  The Department has a variety of motorized vehicles for our volunteers to utilize.

The patrol division is also responsible for documenting and reporting graffiti.  Studies have shown that the quicker graffiti is removed, the less likely it is to return.  Photographs are taken of the graffiti and Garden City Public Works in contacted to paint over it.

Monitoring local registered sex offenders is also a part of this division.  This task is strictly clerical and entails contacting the surrounding police and sheriff's departments to gain access to the appropriate paperwork for court to assist in the successful prosecution of those offenders who choose to violate the restrictions of their probation.

 Criminal Investigations Unit

Volunteers in this unit contact victims of cold case property crimes to get updates or additional information about their case.

 Community Service

Volunteers in this area provide  services such as bicycle registrations, car seat inspections, CERT teams, nuisance abatement, fingerprinting children, neighborhood watch programs, transporting patrol cars for maintenance, tagging abandoned vehicles and ticketing illegally parked vehicles.
