HIRING STANDARDS
  1. NO conviction or commission of a felony as an adult except numbers 2 and 3 as defined below, and a case-by-case review of juvenile felony convictions.
  2. NO "soft" illegal drug use in the past three years (i.e. marijuana or illegal use of prescription drugs).
  3. NO "hard" drug use in the past five years (i.e. methamphetamine, LSD, cocaine, heroin, glue/gas/paint huffing).  NOTE:  Numbers 2 and 3 deal only with use and/or possession.  Sale, transportation, manufacture and/or association with anyone who is involved in any of anyone who is involved in any of the listed activities will be cause for disqualification.  An exception to this policy may be granted for a single, experimental, one-time use of marijuana or huffing only with the time periods described.  Polygraph confirmation is required before an exception may be considered.
  4. General misdemeanor convictions reviewed on a case-by-case basis; however, NO convictions for child abuse, stalking or "peeping Tom" type misdemeanors or for any misdemeanor which involves violence or the threat of violence against a spouse, ex-spouse, parent, child, guardian or intimate partner.  Any criminal probation must have already been served.
  5. NO DUI convictions within the past three years.  This policy will also include withheld judgment as conviction.
  6. NO driver's license suspensions in the past three years for violations relating to DUI, chemical test refusal or points assessed due to moving traffic violations if driving is an essential function of the job.
  7. NO dishonorable discharges from any US military force.
  8. Bankruptcy - It shall be the policy of the Garden City Police Department to NOT hire applicants who are either presently undergoing action in bankruptcy court or planning to file bankruptcy in any state on either a personal or business level.  After filing bankruptcy, a period of at least one year must pass before an applicant can apply for a position with the Garden City Police Department and they must have demonstrated financial responsibility since that time.
