Chief Cory Stambaugh announces retirement; successor named.

After 31 years in law enforcement, Garden City Police Chief Cory Stambaugh will retire Aug. 4, 2026.

Cory began his law enforcement career in September 1994 as a volunteer reserve officer with the Garden City Police Department.  He became a full-time officer in June 1995 and served as a patrol officer, detective, and sergeant through May 2008.

He joined the Boise Police Department in July 2008 as a patrol officer and later served as a narcotics detection K-9 handler, detective, and sergeant.

Cory returned to the Garden City Police Department in March 2020 as lieutenant over the patrol division.  He became interim Chief of Police on July 1, 2023, following the retirement of longtime Chief Rick Allen, and was sworn in as Chief on Aug. 28, 2023.

Cory said, “It has been an honor to serve our citizens for the past 31 years.  I have worked with some of the finest police officers in the nation, who work hard to keep Idaho a great and safe place to live.”

On May 26th, 2026, Garden City Mayor William Jacobs nominated Garden City Police Lieutenant Tyler Domeny to become the next Garden City Police Chief, effective August 5, 2026.   The Garden City City Council enthusiastically approved Lt. Domeny’s appointment.
